The Board of Directors of Medical Mission Ecuador USA would like to share information regarding an optional medical malpractice insurance policy available to volunteers who will be participating in direct patient care during the mission (including therapists, nurses, and physicians).

For many years, members of our mission teams have utilized professional liability coverage through Gallagher Charitable Travel / International Helpers (Guernsey) Trust, an organization that specializes in malpractice insurance tailored specifically for small-group international medical mission trips. This coverage is available to individuals providing patient care, with multiple tiers based on scope and complexity of services—ranging from rehabilitation therapy and nursing care to medical and surgical practice.

The enrollment process is straightforward. Volunteers indicate the dates and location of the mission, select coverage appropriate to their scope of practice, and pay a fee that covers the full duration of the trip (typically four to five days). An optional rider is also available for coverage of potential claims filed in the United States following the mission.

While we are grateful that no issues have arisen on prior trips, healthcare today exists in an increasingly interconnected global environment. Patients can more easily locate providers across borders should concerns arise. This optional coverage offers added peace of mind and professional protection at a relatively modest cost.

Participation in this insurance is entirely voluntary and remains a personal decision for each volunteer. As part of mission participation, all volunteers acknowledge that Medical Mission Ecuador USA is not financially responsible for individual professional actions, and that each provider remains personally responsible for the care they deliver.
